Today, I would like to talk about ACES - Adverse Childhood Experiences.
What is ACES? ACES can include physical and emotional abuse as a child. It can also include neglect, caregiver mental illness, and household violence. ACES can cause long-term mental health issues and health problems as a child grows. When a child is subject to continuous mental abuse, physical abuse, and/or neglect, it ruins their self-esteem, mental health and physical health in the future.
ACES can cause Toxic Stress. According to acesaware.org, Toxic Stress is the body's response to lasting and serious stress, without enough support from a caregiver. When a child doesn't get help, his body can't turn off the stress response normally. This lasting stress can harm a child's body and brain and can cause lifelong health problems.
I am intrigued by the ACE's model because I have long-term effects from childhood abuse. I was anorexic in high school, I still have trouble with self-esteem, it's hard for me to speak in public because I am afraid people are judging me and finally, I have a terminal illness. Do I blame the abuse for this disease, not entirely. Do I believe that it contributed to it? Absolutely!!
I could go on and on, but I won't. I want to give hope to those that have suffered at the hands of an abuser as a child or even now. There is help out there. I managed to break the cycle and raise my kids in a non-violent home. My goal from the beginning was to show them unconditional love. I often tell people that I raised my kids the complete opposite of the way I grew up. They have all turned out to be awesome, wonderful adults. They are caring and loving, and they love Jesus! #goalaccomplished
God had a plan for me. I was able to marry a man that loved me through my healing stages. Let me tell you, that was not easy! Without him and God's Grace, I truly believe that I would not be here today. I started attending counseling a few years ago. Counseling is so very important.
God has carried me through it all. I am now learning to love myself, and I have been helping domestic violence victims for more than 10 years.
